One of these landed on my van in Newtown today and I've been Googling to find out what it was and when I saw the name Dark Giant Horsefly come up,it was then that I remembered this posting of yours Phil. What an impressive creature!
I agree with you Nigel a very impressive creature, don't really know how common they are but it was the first one I had ever seen
